DIY LED headlights attached to car's parking lights.. how to wire?
by anonymous Feb 05 2008

from an email to CuriousInventor.com:

Hi. The reason that I am emailing you is because I am in a lil confusing.

I am trying to make my own costum led lights for my headlights, and im stuch.
What I have right is a 2inch in lenght X 4 inch in widght pcb board, 6 leds, and resistors.
I know how to solder them, but what i dont know is how i am going to have to solider the leds and the resistors so i will end up having 2 wires{one negative and one positive} coming out of that pcb board. here is an example of a guy that did his costum led spoiler bar for his car and he showed his progress:

as you can see, he did a very nice job.

basically, i want to do the same thing, only with less number of leds{i will be using only 6 leds} and a smaller pcb board.
can you please give me some help on this?

CuriousInventor: Can we post this to our forums?

You absolutely can.
I will just give you an idea and a few more pictures of what i am going to be working with.
basically, this is the pcb board that I ordered{see attached picture}. I will be cutting that pcb in half because i will need the other half to go into my other headlight. I will use 5mm bright white led’s, resistors, and a 10volt 1amp regulator{see attaced pic}.
I will have 6 leds lined up on each pcb board, and solder them into the board from the back.
what i would like to know how i need to solder the leds, resistors and the regulator so that everything will work fine. and lastly, how and where do i need to solder 18awg wires so that I will have 1 red{positive} and 1 black{negative} wire coming out of that pcb board so i will be able to hook it up into my car’s parking lights.

Thank you very much.

Not sure what your knowledge level is—sorry if this isn’t what you were asking for :)

First, how are you picking the particular resistor values and LEDs? Are you using part numbers from somebody else? If so, I’d also copy the circuit connections, also.

The picture you uploaded isn’t a 10V regulator, it’s a 12V regulator. Both regulators would probably require at least 15V input to output at their rated level (not the car’s 12V). Also note that the 1amp advertisement on the regulator only works if you attach a heat sink, otherwise you’re probably only going to get about .3A before it shuts down from over heating (this is a big guess…).

But, I don’t think you need a regulator at all. You need to figure out how much current you want going through each LED first. Then there are lots of ways to hook everything up. You could make pairs of LEDs and resistors, and hook them all up in parallel:

In the parallel case, you’d probably need a volt regulator, but in series, the combined voltage drop across all the diodes could be enough so that you don’t need any regulation.

As for soldering, you’ll have to make your own connections between holes either by bridging the holes with solder or running wire from hole to hole. I’d recommend the pos and neg wire all the way down each board, like train tracks. Then attach LEDs and Resistors where needed.

I’m not sure if this is what you were looking for, or more soldering specific. Let me know.
